Introduction

Android phones and tablets are popular in enterprise scenarios due to their versatility and of course the budget. However, ensuring the security of these devices is of utmost importance, especially when used in public spaces or shared environments. One effective way to enhance device security is by restricting its functionality to essential applications and settings using suitable device lockdown solutions.

In this case study, we will see how The Fullstop was able to safeguard its fleet of Android devices using Hexnode’s top-of-the-line kiosk management solution.

Background

Founded in 2002, The Fullstop is an independent advertising and communications agency with branches in Jeddah and Riyadh. They serve a growing portfolio of both national and international brands and provide a variety of services, including copywriting, video and animation editing, film production, and much more.

Challenges Faced

The team at The Fullstop had deployed Samsung devices in hotels as digital signages to facilitate guest interaction. However, since these devices were assigned to remote locations, the IT team had to visit each location on a weekly basis to ensure they were operating properly. Moreover, these devices were unmanaged and free to operate without restrictions, paving way for security risks and potential data breaches.

Consideration of MDM solutions

“The ease of use, competitive pricing and excellent customer support is what made us go with Hexnode”

While searching for an effective MDM solution, the team came across plenty of options. However, Hexnode stood out from the lot, mainly due to its competitive pricing and rich device management features. Additionally, the team found Hexnode’s onboarding process to be remarkably quick and simple. They never had to make any compromises or unexpected changes to their existing workflow.

Adoption of Hexnode

With the adoption of Hexnode, the team saved a significant amount of time and travel expenditure previously spent on manual device maintenance. With Hexnode’s remote monitoring and management (RMM) feature, the team no longer had to physically attend to each device. Instead, the team could view the device screens directly from the Hexnode portal and take control of them to troubleshoot any issues that may have occurred.

Given that the devices were deployed in public spaces, the team was also looking for possible solutions to securely lock down their devices. Hexnode’s single app kiosk mode enabled the team to do just that by restricting the Android devices to The Fullstop application, disabling all other functionalities. This allowed them to convert their standard tablets into secure kiosk devices that could only be used for work intended purposes. Hexnode further enhanced device security by allowing them to send and install important updates to the application without exiting the kiosk mode.
