How to skip setup for manually enrolled Macs?Solved

Hi Community, we’re planning to enroll several newly purchased MacBooks into our organization using Hexnode. To streamline the process, we’re looking for a way to skip the setup assistant steps during enrollment, so users don’t have to go through them manually. I would really appreciate any tips on how to make this work!

Hey @arthur , since your devices are newly purchased you can add them to your Apple Business Manager (ABM) portal and enroll them using Apple’s Automated Device Enrollment (ADE) method. With ADE, you can assign an enrollment profile to each device that allows you to skip Setup Assistant steps and pre-configure user account creation.

Here’s how you can skip the Setup Assistant steps during ADE enrollment,

  1. Log in to your Hexnode UEM portal.
  2. Navigate to Enroll > Platform-Specific > iOS/macOS/tvOS > Apple Business/School Manager.
  3. Go to Enrollment Profiles.
  4. Click on Create Enrollment Profile.
  5. Select Setup Assistant and click on Configure.

By enabling the option Automatically advance through Setup Assistant, you can skip all the steps involved in setup. You can also choose to skip specific steps such as FileVault and iCloud storage setup instead of skipping all of them.

Can we also manage account creation on the Macs through the enrollment profiles? Setting up user accounts on each device individually after enrollment seems time-consuming. So, is there a way to remotely configure user accounts on the devices?

@arthur , you’re right! Setting up user accounts on each device individually can be a nightmare. But with ADE, enrollment profiles can help you manage user account creation on your macOS devices and overcome this issue.

To configure this, go to:
Enroll > Platform-Specific > iOS/macOS/tvOS > Apple Business/School Manager > Enrollment Profiles, then click on Account Creation.

From there, you can:

  • Pre-configure a managed admin account,
  • Enforce local user account creation (admin or standard),
  • Or choose to skip account creation entirely

Check out our help doc on managing account creation using enrollment profiles which will help you get a clear understanding over the topic.

Hi! Just want to follow up on this thread. Is there a benefit to skipping account creation entirely?

We don’t have Apple’s Volume Purchase Program (VPP) enabled so we’ve been giving users admin accounts so they can download apps like Zoom and Slack and approve security updates. Would they be able to still do that if no account has been created? Would skipping local account creation also mean there’s no lock screen?

Hello @_katek , welcome to Hexnode Connect! Let’s break down your question.

Skipping account creation does not provide any special advantage other than allowing users to set up their own accounts manually on the device. Since you want users to be able to install apps that require admin permissions, it’s recommended to create a local account with administrator privileges during the enrollment profile setup.

As for the lock screen–yes, if account creation is skipped, no local account will be created on the device and hence won’t show a lock screen.

Hope this answers your questions! Feel free to reach out if you need more help.

Best Regards,
