A Remote Telemetry Unit (RTU) is a microprocessor-based industrial device that monitors field equipment, collects operational data, and communicates that information to supervisory systems such as SCADA. RTUs also receive commands from control centers and execute them by controlling connected devices, making them a critical component of industrial automation and operational technology (OT) environments.
RTUs are commonly deployed in geographically distributed industrial environments where continuous remote monitoring is required. Industries such as power generation, water and wastewater treatment, oil and gas, mining, transportation, and utilities use RTUs to monitor equipment and automate operations across remote sites.
Because RTUs often operate in harsh environments and support real-time control, they are designed for high reliability, low power consumption, and continuous operation.
An RTU collects data from field devices, processes it locally, and communicates with a central control system over wired or wireless networks.
| Stage | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Data collection | Receives signals from sensors, meters, and other field devices |
| Local processing | Processes input data and applies predefined logic |
| Communication | Sends telemetry data to a SCADA or control center |
| Remote control | Receives commands from operators and controls connected equipment |
| Continuous monitoring | Repeats the process to provide real-time operational visibility |
Many RTUs continue operating independently even if communication with the control center is temporarily interrupted.
An RTU combines industrial hardware and communication capabilities to support remote monitoring and control.
| Component | Function |
|---|---|
| Processor | Executes control logic and manages communications |
| Input/Output (I/O) modules | Interface with sensors, switches, relays, and actuators |
| Communication interfaces | Connect to SCADA systems using industrial communication protocols |
| Memory | Stores configuration settings, operational data, and event logs |
| Power supply | Supports reliable operation, often with battery backup |
| Local control logic | Enables autonomous operation when communications are unavailable |
These components allow RTUs to collect telemetry and control industrial assets across distributed environments.
Hexnode XDR helps organizations secure the Windows endpoints that support RTU operations, including engineering workstations, operator terminals, and jump servers. It collects endpoint telemetry, detects suspicious activity, and provides centralized visibility into threats and incidents, helping security teams identify compromised endpoints before attackers can access industrial control systems.
Hexnode XDR also supports response actions such as endpoint isolation and incident investigation. While it does not manage RTUs or inspect industrial communication protocols directly, it strengthens the security of the managed endpoints used to configure, monitor, and maintain RTU-based environments.
RTUs commonly support industrial protocols such as Modbus, DNP3, IEC 60870-5-101/104, and IEC 61850, depending on the industry and deployment requirements.
Yes. Many RTUs can continue collecting data and executing local control logic even when communication with the control center is temporarily unavailable. Once connectivity is restored, they can synchronize operational data with the SCADA system.
