Silent App Installation in macOS Devices

Hexnode MDM allows store apps purchased via Apple’s Volume Purchase Program(VPP) and enterprise apps to be easily deployed on macOS devices. To push apps to devices without user intervention, it is necessary to ensure that your organization is enrolled in Volume Purchase Program. For more information, refer to Apple’s VPP Guide. To install VPP apps to devices, you need to integrate Hexnode MDM with your corporate VPP account.

Add VPP Store Apps to Hexnode App Inventory

The following instructions explain how to purchase an app from Volume Purchase Program.

  1. Go to https://vpp.itunes.apple.com/ and login with your VPP credentials.
  2. Search for the applications you wish to purchase.
  3. Enter the number of licenses you wish to purchase. Click on Review Order to view your purchase summary.
  4. Click on place order to confirm your purchase.

Go to Admin > VPP Settings. Here, you can see all the accounts added to Hexnode MDM server. Click the Sync button corresponding to the account you have used to purchase apps in the previous steps. The purchased apps now available in the Hexnode app inventory is ready for distribution.

Install app from app inventory to a single device

  1. Navigate to Management > Devices and select the macOS device.
  2. Click on Manage > Install Application.
  3. Select the app you wish to distribute from Local Apps.
  4. Click on Done.

Install app from app inventory to selected devices

  1. Navigate to Management > Devices and select the devices to which the app is to be distributed.
  2. Click on Manage > Install Application.
  3. Uncheck iOS and Android options and select the app you wish to distribute from Local apps.
  4. Click on Done.

Install Applications using Hexnode MDM Policies

Via Mandatory Apps

Defining apps as mandatory enables admin to ensure that all the essential apps are compulsorily installed on devices without user intervention. Here’s how you can set apps as mandatory.

  1. Navigate to Policies and select a New Policy.
  2. Give a suitable name and description for your policy.
  3. Click on Mandatory Apps option from macOS Settings.
  4. Click on +Add > Add App to select the app you wish to install, from Local Apps. Click on Done. Repeat this step to configure multiple apps as mandatory. Similarly, you can also configure app groups as mandatory. Click on +Add > App Group to select the app groups you wish to set as mandatory. Click on Done.
  5. Navigate to Policy Targets and select +Add Devices to add the devices you wish to associate the policy to.
  6. Hit Save.

The apps will be installed silently on selected devices.
