Data Management for iOS

Michelle Hendricks
expand collapsive

Data Management helps in monitoring data usage in iOS devices. It helps in tracking both mobile and Wi-Fi data. You can track the data usage and restrict the usage on exceeding the pre-configured data limit.

You can also set up the data usage limit, track daily/monthly usage and notify the admin/user on the data usage via email. Reports can be generated for data consumption for mobile/Wi-Fi/total data.

App-wise data tracking and restrictions can be set to identify the data-hogging apps, control the data usage within the app and much more.

This feature is on its way. Meanwhile, stay updated with our latest releases.

Cheers!

Is there an update when this will be released?  I really like Hexnode and happy with everything so far, however I did register on the premise that these features were going to be released in Q3.

    Thank you

    Hey GD,

We have released a brand new feature Network Usage Rules. With this you can now restrict the applications from using cellular data on your iOS devices. You can also restrict the data usage on roaming.

Network usage rules can be set only on the applications that have been installed on the devices via Hexnode.

Here is where you can find this option in your Hexnode portal.

    • Go to Policies > iOS > Expense Management > Network Usage Rules.

Have a look at iOS Network usage rules to know more.

    Cheers!

    Thank you Michelle,

What I would like to know is when are we able to see the Data usage on IOS devices as mentioned.  Network usage rules are a very nice start, but what was stated is:

“You can also set up the data usage limit, track daily/monthly usage and notify the admin/user on the data usage via email. Reports can be generated for data consumption for mobile/Wi-Fi/total data.

App-wise data tracking and restrictions can be set to identify the data-hogging apps, control the data usage within the app and much more.”

That is what we are waiting for.  Is there a timeline on this?

    Thank you!

Anything new on this?  We keep getting told about 2 months but nothing has changed.  This is a very important feature to us.  It was the reason our company chose Hexnode specifically.  Other MDM’s are able to do this now.  Can we please get a better estimate of release?

I have used the feature in Expense Management, but we are looking for Data tracking to be able to see what apps are using all the data first.

    Thank you

    Hey GD,

    Thank you for your patience.

The feature is on the final development stage and will be rolled out once it’s been finalized by our team. Hope this would take around 1-1.5 months for the feature to get released.

I am really sorry for the inconvenience caused. Will keep you posted once the feature is available.

    Cheers!

    Hi there,

just checking in on the update of this?  I feel like a pest, but in April of 2019 we were told 2 months, and now it is almost Sept of 2020.

I know there has been a lot this year, but I have seen a lot of new features coming out, but the one promised is still nowhere near releasing as far as I can see.

Is this feature going to be released or is it benched?  I need to know very soon as we are about to increase our system by over 200 more devices and I will need that feature, or will need to use a different MDM that already has it up and running.

    Thank you

    Hi Glenn,

We completely understand your concern and this is completely justified.

We understand that requesting a feature for quite a long time and not able to see them within the time period that was promised can be a huge blowout.

Hence, please accept our sincere apologies prior to saying anything else. We are really sorry and our intention was never to give any false hopes to you. Our team has been doing their best from day one itself to get the feature implemented with the Hexnode portal.

We completely understand that this does not justify the delay from our end, and we are really sorry for the same.
iOS device management for MDM solutions has been becoming a greater challenge with the latest iOS 13 versions. Apple has been implementing restrictions over the MDM solutions that narrow the control the MDM has over the iOS devices especially with the latest releases.

An example of the same would be that with iOS 13+ devices, any app that access location service needs to run in the foreground and not in the background to fetch the device location.

Data management is such a huge feature, needs to implemented relying on the MDM protocols of managing iOS devices and being in compliance with the latest iOS versions as well. We have been putting in a great deal of effort into getting this feature to be implemented with the Hexnode portal.

However, due to some inevitable results in testing and development, the feature release was getting delayed. We would never like to provide our valuable customers with a feature that is buggy or have even a minor glitch.
The feature has been going over a thorough testing period which included additional loop over development for enhancing the feature and resolving the issues that arise.

We are really grateful for the patience you have kept with us over this period and we humbly request you to provide us one more chance and give us a little more time to have this feature implemented within the Hexnode portal.
We, on behalf of the entire Hexnode family, deeply regret the delay from our end.

    Cheers!

Hello – I would like to check if there has been any progress on this feature request.

The last response was in August 2020, so we’re nearing in on a year, over 2 years since the original post. We recently upgraded our licensing to the Ultimate license tier as we were under the assumption that this wasn’t only restricted to Android but here we are.

    On the page: https://www.hexnode.com/mobile-device-management/pricing/compare-plans/

It doesn’t have an asterisk by data usage reports under “Mobile Data Management” saying it’s an Android only feature for right now – So it does seem misleading as you can really only set restriction policies for mobile data on iOS as of writing and not get detailed usage reports by device user and as granular as by application. This is a very useful feature for expense management and is available on other MDM solutions, so I’m hoping there is an update soon.

    Hi Dennis,

    Hope you are doing well,

We would like to apologise for the delay in having the feature released. We understand that this has taken quite a bit of time, but our team is currently working on this with a high priority. We have encountered setbacks along the way with this feature owing to Apple’s MDM protocol and the increased rise in the restrictions that we are able to configure.

As this option is being restricted by the MDM protocol set by Apple, we are being forced to compromise and find a way to work around this. Due to this, there were unforeseen roadblocks that we are trying to overcome and therefore the development of this feature could take quite a while longer which would be approximately towards the end of the fourth quarter of this year. In the initial phase, we shall roll out the data usage tracking.

We shall keep you informed with the updates regarding this feature.

Regarding the information on the pricing page, it was never our intention to mislead you regarding the availability of the feature for IOS devices. We shall check this with the team concerned and have this looked into.

We understand that you had opted for the Ultimate version keeping this feature in mind, and if you have no other requirement of the Ultimate plan, you could send us a request via mdm-support@hexnode.com and we could have this downgraded to the previous plan accordingly.

I would like to once again reiterate our apologies for the delay and we shall look to have this feature developed as fast as possible and we shall let you know once this feature has been released.

We sincerely hope you and your loved ones take care and stay safe.

    Cheers!
