Not able to update iPads to iOS 14 using Apple Configurator. I am using a MacBook Pro (OSX Catalina). Need to do update 50 iPads before enrolling in Hexnode within this week. And not even one is done. HELP!!

P.S.- The error being shown: The operation couldn’t be completed. (AMRestoreErrorDomain error 4 – failed to handle message type StatusMsg) [AMRestoreErrorDomain – 0x4 (4)]

  • Hello Ashton,

Thank you for reaching out to us.

Using Hexnode, you need not install updates individually. Hexnode allows you to push OS updates on supervised iOS/iPadOS devices. Make sure that your devices running on versions earlier than iOS 10.3 are DEP-enrolled. Go to the Manage tab, select the devices which need OS updates, and push the remote action “Update OS”.  Note that on devices running iOS 10.3 and later, software update does not require DEP enrollment.

    Cheers!!

  • @Ashton If you are keen on updating each device individually before enrolling into Hexnode (not recommended) try updating without using the Configurator.

    • Put the iPad in recovery mode.
    • Ensure that Mac is up to date. Open Finder in your Mac.
    • Connect the iPad to the Mac and wait till it opens in recovery mode.
    • Select the connected iPad from Finder > Locations. You will get a pop-up asking to either Update or Restore the device. Go for the Update option. The software required for the update will be downloaded. If the download takes more than 15 minutes and if the device exits recovery mode, wait for the download to be completed. Then put the iPad in recovery mode and try again.
    • Setup the device after the update.

You will have to do this with all 50 devices. (Now you know why it’s not recommended.)

    Cheers!!
