How do I enable Device Owner mode?

Enrolling company-owned devices in Android Enterprise Device Owner mode is a sure-fire way to achieve complete control over corporate Androids. Device Owner mode gives options to configure policies and customize hardware and software functions for Android devices. You will also need a Mobile Device Management solution like Hexnode to set up, secure and manage Android Enterprise devices for your organization.

To enable Device Owner mode, you must first ensure that your organization is enrolled in the Android Enterprise program. Device owner mode can only be assigned during the initial setup process of the devices. In case of already used devices, you must remove all associated google accounts and factory reset the device.

The method to enable Device Owner mode on Android differs based on the OS version of the device.

For Android OS 5.0+, use Android Debug Bridge (ADB) to provision devices as a device owner.

For Android OS 6.0+, When the setup requires your Google account credentials, enter the Device Policy Controller (DPC) identifier and follow the required steps.

For Android 7.0+, tap on the ‘Welcome’ screen 7 times to install a QR code reader. Scan the QR code and follow the given instructions to enroll the Android as Device Owner.

Additionally, with Android Zero-Touch Enrollment or Samsung’s Knox Mobile Enrollment services, IT can easily streamline the provisioning of Android Enterprise Device Owner devices to their organization.
